AGAINST THE ODDS: Pioneer Women of Monterey County
Whether labeled “hell on wheels,” “pillars of the community” or “grand dames of local society,” the energy, wisdom and strength of the women featured in this exhibition were forces to be reckoned with during their lifetimes.

Born circa 1862
Physician
Dr. May Gydison received her medical education at the Omaha
Medical College in Nebraska, and spent one year of study in
Europe, chiefly in the large hospitals of Germany and
Denmark. After her return from Europe she graduated from
the Woman's Medical College, of Chicago, Illinois, and this
completed her course of studies. She practiced her profession
one year in Omaha, then in 1884 moved to Salinas with her
parents and established her medical practice. She later opened
a small hospital for women which was the only one of it's kind
