Monterey Regional Airport Updates the Construction Timeline for Airport Roadway Entrance
Phased Project Continues to Prioritize Safety and Minimize Impacts to Motorists - Travelers Are Asked to Arrive 90 Minutes Before Flight Departure Time for On-Time Boarding
Monterey, CA, July 14, 2026 – Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) continues constructing a new roadway system to support the replacement passenger terminal, which is part of the FAA-required MRY Metamorphosis Safety Enhancement Program. Begun in March 2026, the construction project includes a roundabout at the airport roadway entrance and is expected to continue until mid-November 2026. Public comments and questions regarding the roadway construction project can be sent to montereyairport.com/program-contact.
The reconfigured airport entrance and roundabout, located at the intersection of Olmsted Road and Garden Road, are part of the revised roadway circulation for MRY’s new passenger terminal. The project, which is being built in three phases, prioritizes the safety of workers and motorists and aims for minimal impacts to those driving to, from, and through MRY and on roadways located adjacent to the airport.
Video animation showing what the completed roundabout will look like in relation to the Long-Term Parking Lot temporary entrance can be viewed below.
All phases of the work are scheduled on weekdays between approximately 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Motorists are advised that driving lanes will shift throughout the phased project.
Phase 1
Prior to the first phase, construction has been preliminary underground utility work. Phase 1 begins the week of July 13 and is expected to continue through September 4. This phase will include constructing the roundabout.
Phase 2
Phase 2, scheduled from approximately September 8 through October 2, will involve roadway construction on the east side of Olmsted Road.
Phase 3
The third and final phase of the project, scheduled from approximately October 5 through November 13, will involve roadway construction on the west side of Olmsted Road and Garden Road adjacent to the roundabout.
While the roundabout is being constructed, crews are committed to:
- Keeping traffic lanes open at all times
- Ensuring the roadways’ intersection remains open at all times
- Minimizing delays for passengers, employees, ground transportation providers, and other airport users
- Maintaining access to residential and commercial driveways in the vicinity of the project at all times. Parking along the first 500 feet of Garden Road west of Olmsted Road will not be permitted.
The public may observe construction vehicles and signage during the project. Flagger personnel will regulate and direct traffic on Olmsted Road, Garden Road, and Fred Kane Drive during all active construction periods.
Motorists are asked to comply with directional information from flaggers, roadway signage, and markings to ensure their and other motorists’ safety.
Upon completion of construction, travelers and other airport users will use the roundabout to access the existing passenger terminal and airport parking. When the replacement passenger terminal becomes operational, which is anticipated in summer 2027, the roundabout will also connect to the new roadway that supports the new facility and adjacent parking facilities.
To ensure on-time airline check-in and boarding during the peak summer travel season, passengers are asked to arrive to MRY at least 90 minutes before scheduled flight departure time.
