Demolition begins for new airport terminal

Shortly before Christmas, crews began tearing down the old hangars and fire station on the southeast side of the Monterey airport to make way for a new passenger terminal, executive director Mike La Pier said Thursday. And in late November, the airport district’s board of directors chose one of four design ideas that will be fleshed out in more detail this spring.

Grants bring Monterey Regional Airport one step closer to a new runway and terminal.

Monterey Regional Airport, the county’s only commercial airport, serves over 400,000 passengers annually. But the terminal those passengers use, originally built in 1950 and expanded in 1973, is outdated. For years, MRY has operated commercial flights with a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration. “Our current terminal building is too close to the existing taxiway and the taxiway is too close to the runway,” says Michael La Pier, the airport’s executive director.

MONTEREY – The Monterey Regional Airport had a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week to its nearly-completed new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting facility marking another notch in its multi-phase safety enhancement program. The existing Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting building will need to be demolished to make way for the new terminal building for passenger traffic, and the new apron or ramp – the designated area of the airport where aircraft are parked, unloaded, loaded, refueled and boarded by passengers.

Monterey Regional Airport to build brand new terminal

MONTEREY, Calif. — Thursday, Monterey Regional Airport announced plans to build a brand new terminal after receiving $25 million in federal funding. “It’s huge. Monterey Regional Airport Announces Grants Totaling $4.2 Million for Design and Construction of New Terminal Building

MONTEREY, CA. (Dec. 26, 2022) — With a $2.14 million grant from the Department of Transportation received in late November, the Monterey Regional Airport now has $4.2 million toward the design and construction of a new airport terminal.

The funds are from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill for Federal Fiscal Year 2023, along with another $2.14 million grant from the same piece of legislation from Fiscal Year 2022.
