MONTEREY – Monterey Regional Airport will see its Executive Director fly off into the sunset as Mike La Pier retires next year concluding eight years of service. “It is with great pride that I announce my retirement as the Executive Director of Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) effective June 6, 2025,” La Pier said in his letter of resignation to the Monterey Peninsula Airport District Board of Directors and airport staff.

Mike La Pier, who’s served as Monterey Regional Airport’s executive director since being hired in June 2016, announced today, Sept. 24, that he will be retiring effective June 6, 2025. In his announcement, La Pier highlighted the many accomplishments achieved by the airport staff in his tenure, including increasing the airport’s cash reserves from $2.8 million to $14 million and counting.

The federal grants, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program, will support the modernization of the Monterey Airport including funding for new terminal work, runway and tarmac improvements, and new aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment. This year, the Airport Improvement Program has invested more than $1.1 billion in airport infrastructure projects around the country.
Monterey airport board gets update on new replacement terminal design
Existing terminal to remain operational during construction, which is set to begin in 2025
MONTEREY – With the design phase of a new airport terminal fully funded earlier this month, the Monterey Peninsula Airport District Board received a presentation update of the replacement terminal design at its meeting on Wednesday. Alan Bright and Bart van Vilet, principals with HOK provided the update to show where the process is, what the firm has been doing by way of the design and gave insight into what the project is shaping up to be. HOK Group Inc., a design, architecture, engineering and urban planning firm out of St. Louis was selected in 2022 by the Airport Board as the architect for the replacement terminal.

Board approves up to $50M in debt
A massive earth-moving effort is underway to create more space for planes at Monterey Airport and prepare for the construction of a new terminal, and architects are nearly done designing the facility, Chris Morello, the airport’s deputy executive director, said Friday. Meanwhile, the airport district board of directors unanimously approved a resolution July 17 allowing up to $50 million in debt for the project, and U.S. Rep. Jimmy Panetta announced Tuesday that the federal government committed another $2.58 million toward the new terminal.

Jimmy Panetta, CA-19, on Tuesday.

MONTEREY, Calif. — United States Rep. Jimmy Panetta announced that new federal funding was secured for the Monterey Regional Airport’s design phase for a new terminal. More than $2.58 million was awarded to the terminal replacement project and this new funding will support the rest of the design project. “We are very pleased that the second and final FAA grant funding the design of the replacement terminal at Monterey Regional Airport has been awarded today,” said Michael La Pier, the executive director of Monterey Regional Airport.
How designers are responding to evolving seating priorities
The days of ‘standard issue’ terminal seating are long gone. Once upon a time, airports would simply install uniform four-seater benches anywhere seating was needed, but the way they think design seating areas has become much more nuanced. “There’s been a shift in the balance between practicality from an airport perspective and overall satisfaction of seating from a passenger perspective, moving from a one-size-fits-all view to more qualitative seating,” says Marijn Duits, project lead for passenger experience at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Complaints about flight noise around the Monterey Regional Airport have inspired activism.
For years, some residents in Del Rey Oaks, Monterey and elsewhere have complained about airplane noise from flights taking off or landing at Monterey Regional Airport. Some of those complaints arose after the Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates all the flights coming to or leaving the airport, implemented in 2015 its “NextGen” technology at the facility, part of a nationwide effort to modernize how the agency manages federal airspace.
Tourists head back home from the Central Coast after holiday weekend
Just like Evenson, millions of other people traveled for the Fourth of July weekend. ”We saw tremendous traffic, we saw lots of people. Operations were very consistent, positive and on time,” said Michael La Pier, Executive Director for the Monterey Regional Airport. People like Craig Lassiter visited the Monterey Peninsula from Connecticut. He said he avoids the big airports, especially during the holidays. ”I didn’t want to go through all of that. Monterey is a nice easy airport; in and out no problems,” said Lassiter. “That’s why I came this way.”
Holiday weekend, inland heat draws throngs of visitors to Monterey region
With visitors to the Monterey Bay region taking to the roads to have a cooler Independence Day, many took to the skies to get to the destination. “Our passenger traffic over the weekend was strong, although only slightly stronger than any other weekend,” said Monterey Regional Airport Executive Director Mike La Pier. “According to TSA (Transportation Security Administration), we saw between 4,000 and 4,500 people board our partner airlines from Thursday through Monday. That equates to an over 85% load factor.”

The Italian Air Force demonstration squadron Frecce Tricolori, shown here flying over the Strip in Las Vegas, will be stopping at the Monterey Regional Airport on Tuesday to refuel then will do a flyover of Salinas at about 3 p.m. The group is on its way to participate in the Sacramento Airshow this week. Frecce Tricolori commander Lt. Col. Massimiliano Salvatore said this is the first time in 32 years that the team has toured North America.

MONTEREY – With its long-term parking lot newly moved and set to begin accommodating cars Friday at 3 a.m., Monterey Regional Airport can now set its sights firmly on the construction of a new air terminal and adjacent apron. Monterey Regional Airport Executive Director Mike La Pier said now that the long-term parking lot has been relocated, workers will start to demolish the old parking area, take care of drainage issues and excavate the site in preparation for the footprint for the new terminal building as well as an adjacent aircraft parking apron.
MarJang Architects Designs New $9.7M ARFF Station for Monterey (CA) Regional Airport
Monterey Regional Airport in California was undergoing a multiphase program of expansion of its facilities, which required repositioning of several core airport functions. The airport’s aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) station was among a number of buildings that had to be repositioned, so the airport had MarJang Architects design a new station that was built by BlueScope Construction and Mill Construction.

MONTEREY, Calif. — The Monterey Regional Airport announced that its long-term parking lot is moving starting on June 14. Starting at 3 a.m., the parking lot will be relocated to make way for building new “airport safety enhancement projects,” said an airport spokesperson in a media release. The new parking lot will be located before the airport’s current long-term lot entrance. Signs on Olmsted Road will guide people to the relocated long-term parking lot entrance.

Civil Grand Jury suggests Monterey airport district improve outreach on noise
MONTEREY – The Monterey County Civil Grand Jury investigated a community complaint regarding noise that aircraft produce during take off and landing at the Monterey Regional Airport and came away recommending better community outreach. “The grand jury spent time to learn about the airport and what we can and can’t do” about aircraft noise, said Monterey Regional Airport Executive Director Mike La Pier. “We appreciate that as there’s always room for improvement in what we do.”
New ARFF Facility Boosts Efficiency, Paves Way for New Terminal at Monterey Regional
A new $9.9 million aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) station is enhancing operational efficiency at Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), as well as providing a more comfortable environment for the personnel that call it home for days at a time. The facility opened last October and took about 10 months to construct. It is located about a half mile from where the previous ARFF, built in 1950, used to stand.

Sun Country Announces New Routes
The airline will take advantage of charter operations to launch more passenger service.
Minneapolis-based ultra-low-cost carrier Sun Country has announced two new routes from its Minneapolis/St.Paul hub. The carrier will offer routes from Minneapolis to Monterey and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. Flights to each destination will launch in August. Flights to Monterey will operate twice weekly, while flights to Manchester will operate once weekly. Neither flight will face direct competition, though JetBlue will indirectly compete in the Boston market with its flight to Boston’s Logan International Airport.
Sun Country Extends Booking Schedule And Adds 2 New Routes

Airport offers holiday lounge for military
Between the Defense Language Institute and the Naval Postgraduate School, the Monterey Peninsula is home to a lot of active-duty members of the military. To thank them for thir service and make their travels home more enjoyable, Monterey Regional Airport is hosting a lounge for them and their companions Dec. 18-25 from 4 a.m. until the last flight each day.

Grants bring Monterey Regional Airport one step closer to a new runway and terminal.
Monterey Regional Airport, the county’s only commercial airport, serves over 400,000 passengers annually. But the terminal those passengers use, originally built in 1950 and expanded in 1973, is outdated. For years, MRY has operated commercial flights with a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration. “Our current terminal building is too close to the existing taxiway and the taxiway is too close to the runway,” says Michael La Pier, the airport’s executive director.

MONTEREY, CA, October 3, 2023 – The Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation under the Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP) for a goal of non-stop service to Chicago.
The grant will be used as a Minimum Revenue Guarantee (MRG) for the service, with the airport investing $100,000 via the waiving of airport fees for the first 2 years of service.
Monterey Regional Airport Awarded Two Federal Grants Totaling $25 Million to Improve Airport Infrastructure
MONTEREY, CA, September 15, 2023 – The Monterey Regional Airport was awarded two grants totaling $25 million to support enhancements to the airport through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced the federal grants, which were made possible through a $22 million Federal Aviation Administration’s AIP grant to support improvements to the airport’s tarmac and terminal and $3 million from the Infrastructure Act for passenger terminal design.

Monterey, CA – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19) announced $25 million in federal funding to support enhancements to Monterey Regional Airport. MONTEREY, CA, August 18, 2023 – The Monterey Regional Airport has seen an increase in passengers boarding commercial flights this summer, May through July, with a staggering 74,181 passengers embarking in just those three months. The May passenger counts started the trend, breaking the milestone for most passengers to fly out of MRY in a single month since the closure of Fort Ord in 1994. With numbers for June and July continuing to increase, MRY has seen its busiest summer in the recent history of the Airport.

The Scoping Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Airport District Board Room on the second floor of the Airport Terminal, at 200 Fred Kane Drive, Monterey CA 93940. The meeting format is an informal open house and interested parties are invited to stop by to view maps and displays, communicate with Airport staff, and provide their written comments. Airport staff will be available to gather the public’s thoughts about what alternatives and environmental impacts should be studied in the environmental analysis.

Monterey, CA – The Monterey Peninsula Airport District Board of Directors approved extending the Air Service Incentive Program for airlines to encourage nonstop service to new destinations from Monterey Regional Airport. The top destinations the airport is seeking include Seattle, Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver and Mexico. The Air Service Incentive Program was originally approved in 2014 and was set to expire on March 31, 2016. It has been extended for an additional two years.
