Safety Enhancement Program

Overview

Safety Enhancement Program

MRY has embarked on a multiphase program to improve and enhance the operational safety of the Runway 10R-28L taxiway system, the Safety Enhancement Program (SEP). To accomplish this safety upgrade, an approximately 1,850-linear-foot (lf) portion of Taxiway A will be relocated south by 52.5 feet. The demolition and relocation of several buildings, including the existing passenger terminal, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) building, and several general aviation hangars, is necessary to relocate Taxiway A.

Once completed, the MRY Metamorphosis will provide an outstanding world-class experience to passengers, optimize airfield land use, and continue to provide economic opportunities for the region through job creation, and environmental stewardship.

For detailed information on timing of the design and construction for each phase noted below, please refer to our program timeline.

Phases of the Safety Enhancement Program

General Aviation Apron & Vehicle Service Road

In 2020, MRY began to construct the necessary pavement and infrastructure to relocate the General Aviation (GA) hangars and tenants from the southeast part of the Airport to the northeast side of the airfield (Phase A).

Concurrent with the northside GA area, the airport provided improvements for an on-airport vehicle service road. This road is used as a construction haul route for the SEP and a service road for airport staff to access both sides of the Airport.

Replacement Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Facility

In 2022, construction began on the relocated Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) facility on the northeast ramp and in early 2023, construction began on the relocated general aviation hangars. Relocation of the ARFF facility and hangars (Phase C) was required to clear the site of the future replacement terminal complex for MRY.

Replacement Commercial Apron

Upon completion of the replacement Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) facility and general aviation hangars in late 2023, the demolition of vacated facilities and construction of the replacement commercial apron (Phase B) commenced. This phase includes demolition of the existing hangar structures, ARFF building, and associated apron pavement. Construction will include the new commercial apron, utility infrastructure to service the future Terminal Building, construction of retaining walls, and the relocation of the long-term parking lot.

Replacement Passenger Terminal Complex

After the replacement commercial apron and associated infrastructure work is complete, construction of the replacement passenger terminal complex will begin.

Relocation of Taxiway A

As the final element of the Safety Enhancement Program (SEP), the Relocation of Taxiway A (Phase E), will improve and enhance the operational safety of the Runway 10R-28L taxiway system by relocating an approximately 1,850-linear-foot (lf) portion of Taxiway A south by 52.5 feet.
