Replacement Terminal

Overview

Replacement Terminal

The MRY Metamorphosis includes building a replacement terminal, which will have a similar footprint to MRY’s existing terminal and is being designed by HOK to achieve net-zero-carbon-ready status. The sustainability goal includes achieving the highest green building standards while using quality and sustainable materials and finishes that are durable, easy to maintain, and reflect the beauty and charm of the Monterey Region.

The Monterey Regional Airport (MRY) terminal building has served the community well since its opening in 1973. The charming facade and high-ceiling check-in area warmly welcome passengers as they begin their journey, and it is a building that the community has grown fond of over the years.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that MRY relocate the passenger facilities to make way for operational safety enhancements to Taxiway A, which connects to and supports the primary air carrier Runway 10R-28L.

Additionally, as local travelers continue to choose MRY for its convenience and the increasing numbers of airlines and destinations, the passenger terminal has become crowded and inefficient. The airport’s growing number of passengers expect short waits for check in, security screening, concessions, restrooms, and baggage claim.

In response to passenger and public feedback received at visioning workshops in 2023, the new terminal design will incorporate features that are traveler-friendly, accessible for all, and reflect the essence and diversity of its local community. From the roadway to the boarding bridges, improved efficiencies will make the terminal easy to navigate with ample room for seating and queuing.
